Meghan's Story

Throughout the middle ages, Wales was a thorn in the side of the English kings. The Welsh were wild and not to be tamed by the English. In an effort to subdue the Welsh, English kings granted land and titles to men, who were known as Marcher Lords.

In the fourteenth century, a man named Richard was the Marcher Lord in Caerleon. He married a woman from a local high ranking Welsh family, named Margaret. In 1384, Margaret died giving birth to their only child, a girl.

Richard named his daughter Margaret, after her mother. Young Margaret was often called Megge ("Meg"), as the shorter name seemed more becoming for the young girl.

As she got older, Megge was sent to England where she was fostered with another noble family. This family exposed her to the courts (which were much more rare in the Welsh Marches), and taught her how to be a proper noble lady. Megge of Caerleon, also called Megge Win at times (meaning Meg the Fair) developed a love for the fantastic clothing of the court, and dancing. Once she got older, Megge Win had the opportunity to travel to a strange, foreign kingdom called An Tir. Having difficulty with strange looking names, the An Tirians called her Meghan of Caerleon. Meghan has stayed in the Barony of Lions Gate, in the Kingdom of An Tir.
Caerleon

Many centuries ago, Caerleon was the site of a Roman fort. Throughout the centuries many different groups have inhabited Caerleon. It is even mentioned in the Arthurian legends as one of the possible locations of Camelot.

Caerleon was the location of a Marcher Lordship established by the medieval english kings. (But Richard, Margaret and Meghan are figments of my imagination). Modernly, Caerleon is just a few miles from the Welsh capital of Cardiff. There are still ruins of a castle in Caerleon.
